Pratt Institute Annual Runway Show Honors Francisco Costa

By Kristi Garced

At 6:30p.m., about 400 guests, including Yeohlee Teng, Italo Zucchelli, Bibhu Mohapatra, Gabi Asfour, Fern Mallis and Peter Davis, trickled into their seats. “I do have to thank our students because they are young creative geniuses,” said Jennifer Minniti, chair of the school’s fashion department, in her opening remarks. “I want to thank them for their commitment, their dedication, their confidence. What you’re about to see here tonight is commentary on their time…This is fashion now.” WWD.com

PRATT FETES FRANCISCO AND TOMORROW

PRATT HONORS CALVIN KLEIN'S FRANCISCO COSTA AND CELEBRATES ITS SENIOR CLASS

Unlike major designers and houses, which show multiple times a year, schools have one shot to present the talent they have fostered in a graduating class. Each student was able to show off his or her entire collection, with musical interludes that showcased their work as individuals, not as a group. Speaking after the show, many of them realized this was an opportunity most young designers do not get. V MAGAZINE

Macy's Unveil's Exhibit by Pratt Students

By David Moin

For fashion week, Macy’s is thinking knitwear as fine art.

An exhibit called “Organic Matter: Woven Artwear by Pratt Fashion” hit Macy’s Herald Square windows last week and will run through Thursday.

For the exhibit, Pratt fashion students were challenged to come up with innovative knitwear styles and partnered with Pratt trustee Ralph Pucci, whose showroom for mannequins, lighting, furniture and sculpture, staged the exhibitinitially. “We asked the students to create the unusual, the unexpected — something that could be viewed as either art or something practical. There were very few restrictions,” said Pucci. “We explained we like clean, simple, minimal design.  The kids that overdid it weren’t selected for the exhibit. The ones we selected were innovative and had the Pucci aesthetic.” When Macy’s window maven Paul Olszewski came to Pucci’s showroom, he thought the show was perfect for fashion week. “Retailers in New York put their best foot forward during fashion week and what better a way to do that than to highlight a show like this? The pieces are amazing.”  WWD.COM

"Sophomores and juniors who participated in the competition were supplied with a pair of knitting needles and skeins of yarn, which could be supplemented with other materials, and given this directive: Rethink the form and function of knitwear as fine art." -April 2014 Issue, Interior Magazine

The Delano Makes A Fashion Statement

"Working with the Pratt students is truly exhilarating. The pieces selected for the exhibit exude talent on a very high level,” Pucci says, who equates the talent of the Pratt students to famous fashion designers.  ralphpucci.net
